The countries that make up the BRICS group are debating the transition to trading in virtual currencies, said the president of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Russian co-president of the BRICS Business Council, Sergey Katirin.
“Financial worktables discuss transactions in digital units. Russia has the digital ruble and the Chinese have the digital yuan,” Katirin told Sputnik on the sidelines of the Women's Business Council and Business Alliance press conference.
At one of the last meetings, he remarked, delegates from Brazil and India announced that they were finishing the work to launch their digital currencies. The most important thing, he emphasized, is that the BRICS do not depend on the dollar or other currencies of third countries in commercial exchange.
According to official data, he said, today 85% of trade within the BRICS space is carried out in national currencies.
“The issue of transactions in national currencies has been addressed practically since the first meetings of the BRICS,” he said.
