Guatemalan authorities confirmed this Saturday the death of 15 people and 22 were injured after the crash of an interurban bus in a ravine in the department of Sololá, located in the southwest of the country.

A spokesman for the Volunteer Fire Department reported that the accident occurred Friday night in the town of Nahualá, in Sololá, when the bus fell into a 75-meter-deep ravine, Sputnik reported.

Rescue operations continued until early Saturday morning. Among the victims are 11 men, three women and a minor, eight of whom have already been identified by the authorities.

The National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) reported that the cause of death in all cases was serious traumatic brain injury and noted that the identity of seven victims has not yet been determined.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction reported that the 22 injured were taken to medical centers in Sololá and announced that it will publish a report on their state of health in the next few hours.
