February 27, 1989, is part of a series of events that led the Supreme Commander, Hugo Chávez Frías, to obtain the electoral victory in December 1998, said the general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello.

“February 27 and 28 were the flashpoint of the Bolivarian Revolution,” Cabello said after the great mobilization that took place in Caracas to commemorate the 36th anniversary of El Caracazo.

In this regard, he pointed out that in those years the Venezuelan people were being attacked and repressed, so they had no other option but to take to the streets to protest. “To express their anger against a government that had no face for the people but for companies, bankers, capitals. In those years, the human being was distant from each of the actions, they didn't care what happened to the People.”

He also stressed that 36 years after these regrettable events, the families of the more than 3,600 martyrs can say that this fight has been worthwhile.
