On the 533rd anniversary of indigenous resistance and decolonization of America last Sunday, the general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello Rondón, highlighted how our native peoples faced the Spanish empire.

“There was a beautiful event, a beautiful march, where the brothers and sisters were marching with their songs, with their own culture, with their costumes, but also with their love and dignity, the dignity of our original peoples who stood in front of the first oppressor here on these sides, the Spanish empire,” he said during the PSUV press conference.

He reaffirmed that the original peoples faced the Spanish Empire with all their will. “And that's where all of us were born,” he said and specified how previously sectors of the oligarchy promoted the narrative of the “discovery of Venezuela, of the discovery of America”.

He also emphasized that “one of the first world leaders to raise his voice on this issue is called Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías; the recognition of original peoples and that is here in this Constitution, our Constitution, approved by our People; without a doubt, there is one before Chávez and one after Chávez also on the subject of original peoples; whoever wants to deny it, deny it, but it would be shocking with reality,” he emphasized.

He also recalled that this Monday marks 203 years since the Liberator Simon Bolivar wrote My Delirio Sobre El Chimborazo, one of the most outstanding pieces of Venezuelan romanticism in the 19th century.

On the other hand, he recalled the preparation exercises carried out by the People to deal with any emergency in the face of earthquakes and rains, in order to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

“On that topic, two weekends ago, we did an exercise in civil protection and protection and preparation of the people; let's remember that that week coincided with a number of unusual seismic events; and our people attended training, preparation in schools, in hospitals, in shopping centers, the places where Venezuelans usually stay,” he said.
