“You are going through a process of formation that you must undertake with maturity, because it is only possible in a Revolution,” said the general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello Rondón, addressing a group of foreign students who are in the country pursuing higher education.
“It fills us with pride to see foreigners training in our country,” he said during his Con El Mazo Dando program, where he summarized how students were treated during the Fourth Republic.
In this regard, he recalled that during the celebration of Student's Day in 1963, 21 students died, plus those injured and a thousand arrests.
“We are talking about times of repression against the student population,” he pointed out while stressing that “today we celebrate with the students of our country in peace.”
“These attacks against students were not only in 1963, but also at the time of Carlos Andrés Pérez, 34 years ago, just before February 4, when there were protests against the approval of the half student ticket,” he recalled.
“And today when I see them organized marching, studying, training, one feels a bit nostalgic because for our generation it wasn't like that (...) friends and acquaintances were disappeared and killed without explanation. Eleven thousand were killed in this country and still three thousand bodies have not been found,” he said.
