On July 25, 1567, after several decades of resistance on the part of the courageous Caribs, the Spaniard Diego de Lossada succeeded in building a citadel, which he named Santiago de León de Caracas.
There are several theories as to why Lossada gave this valley this name. One of them is that these territories were dominated by a Caribbean community called Caracas, who were known for their indomitable spirit that for decades prevented the conquest of these lands.
On the resistance of our Caribs in these valleys, the illustrious Caracas native Achiles Nazoa, in his physical and spiritual book Caracas, recounts important episodes of this history of resistance and conquest, but he also gives us anecdotes that give a chronological account of the construction of the identity of a city that is torn between the traditionalism that can be seen in the names of its corners and streets, and the modernism of a metropolis full of skyscrapers.
Today Caracas, the birthplace of El Libertador Simón Bolívar and of the universal Venezuelan Generalissimo Sebastián Francisco de Miranda, remains rebellious and untamed, nourished by the spirit of its original inhabitants and nourished by the strength and thought of its liberators, to establish itself as the capital of the first Revolution of the 21st century and a gateway to South America that is still fighting for its definitive independence.
