Next Thursday, April 24, the Luis Brito García Reading Room of the Center for Latin American Studies Romulo Gallegos (CELARG) will open its doors to host the conversation to celebrate the centenary of “The Vorágine”, an emblematic novel by the Colombian author José Eustasio Rivera.
During the event, this representative work of Colombian and Latin American literature will be discussed; and will include the participation of the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Milton Rengifo, who will provide his valuable diplomatic and political perspective on the work.
In addition, the Colombian historian, Carlos Guillermo Páramo, and the Venezuelan professor Luis Alberto Crespo, will offer their visions based on academic analysis, contextualizing the novel in its historical and literary moment.
“La Vorágine” tells the story of Arturo Cova, an active intellectual and influential in the public discussions of his time who, through a trip with his beloved, seeks social freedom that takes him from Bogotá to Los Llanos and, finally, to the depths of the jungle. Its open ending leaves the fate of the protagonists in suspense and underlines the visionary nature of the work.
This discussion, in addition to celebrating the centenary of a literary classic, provides an invaluable opportunity to discuss its validity and impact on Latin American literature and culture. The presence of Venezuelan academics, diplomats and authorities promises a fruitful dialogue that will enrich the understanding of this fundamental novel and consolidate its place in the universal literary canon.
