Regarding the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, highlighted the profound achievements achieved by the Bolivarian Revolution within this agency, stressing that it has helped to promote fundamental debates for the peoples of the Global South, through the defense of cultural diversity, multilateralism and international cooperation.
From Plaza Bolívar in Caracas, where the celebration was held with cultural presentations, Foreign Minister Gil specified that, throughout its 26 years, the revolutionary Government has worked tirelessly to guarantee access to education, strengthen cultural identity, promote sovereign scientific progress and ensure the protection of historical heritage. In turn, he points out that Commander Hugo Chávez not only managed to overcome the economic and social poverty inherited from previous decades, but he also reversed “cultural poverty”, which profoundly marked the nation before 1999.
“It was intended to erase the memory of Venezuelans, it was assumed that science and technology had to come from the North, that education was a privilege for few. The Revolution rescued those fundamental values,” said Gil, referring to the fact that in Venezuela, despite the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, a State policy based on the inclusion and democratization of knowledge has been consolidated, achievements repeatedly recognized by UNESCO.
“We are grateful that UNESCO has always valued our efforts... They have a Government in Venezuela committed to the Charter of the United Nations and to the defense of the principles that govern this organization,” said Minister Yván Gil.
