The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, confirmed this Thursday that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela maintains its international commitments in the field of human rights, despite the decision to suspend the activities of the Technical Advisory Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that operates in Caracas.

During a press conference at the Casa Amarilla Antonio José de Sucre, the Chancellor pointed out that, “regardless of this action that we are taking today, we maintain all our commitments in the area of human rights, it is an administrative decision that suspends collaboration and suspends the operation of this office because this office has deviated from its mandate”.

He recalled that this body was created to collaborate technically with the Venezuelan State “to optimize all matters of human rights protection in Venezuela and to show the world the attachment of the Bolivarian Government, but it has been instrumented to be a sounding board for the Venezuelan extreme right opposition.”

Minister Gil's statements come after the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, regarding the arrest of lawyer Rocío San Miguel, accused of terrorism and treason because of her involvement in the assassination plan against the President of the Republic Nicolás Maduro, and other senior authorities of the Bolivarian Government.

The diplomat indicated that the Bolivarian Government has already dismantled 5 conspiracies aimed at attempting the life of the chief, some of his popularly elected ministers and governors. “Could it be that the President of the Republic, the ministers, the governors don't have the right to life, don't they have human rights? We have not seen any statement, not the most timid, from the office in Caracas and let alone from the Office of the High Commissioner condemning or expressing concern that violent groups try to generate or attempt to assassinate the president,” he criticized.
