On December 25, 1977, British actor and film director Charles Chaplin died. His filmography includes “Modern Times” (1936), a critique of the system of capitalist exploitation of the working class.
Charles Chaplin was the first actor to appear on the cover of Time magazine and to appear in a comic strip “PA's Imported Son-in-Law” in 1916.
It is also known that The Great Dictator (1940) was his first spoken film challenging Nazism and it is believed that Adolf Hitler watched the tape twice.
The actor and director never managed to win the Oscar in the acting category, but he did receive the honorary award in 1928 and 1972 and one more for Best Soundtrack. He was also a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.
