The First Fighter, Cilia Flores, during her participation in episode No. 8 of the “Maduro Podcast”, from the house of José María España, urged to vindicate the leading role of women in the independence of Venezuela and to make visible those who were present on the fields of battle, such as Joaquina Sánchez.

“It's very timely, it's time, in Revolution, to give it the importance, the recognition of the leading role that women played in the independence quest,” Flores said.

He also recalled that women were invisible, like many other heroes, “but thanks to historians and to the keen people who search history for the truth, the truth always comes out to give honor and recognition in this case to Joaquina Sánchez”.

“It is important to vindicate that leading role of the woman who was a hero, who also fought and fought, who was not only in the rear as they wanted to show the woman, in the rear helping, cooking, helping to board, to make uniforms,” he added.

Flores argued that the woman was also on the battlefield, “we know stories of women who put on the uniform of soldiers and went to the field and died in battle fighting.”

For his part, President Nicolás Maduro assured that we must continue to rescue the true story. “The women proposed taking Joaquina Sánchez (her name as the documents of the time say), and a group of heroines to the national pantheon, to vindicate them at this time when a powerful women's movement is rising in Venezuela.”
