The closing of the second edition of the Venezuelan Astronomy Olympics (OVA) brought together students, tutors and scientific authorities from the country at the Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán National University of Sciences, a space where the role of the National Scientific Semilleros Program in the formation of new generations linked to science and technology was highlighted.

During the event, the Deputy Minister for the Communalization of Science for Production, Danmarys Hernández, pointed out that this initiative is part of a strategy designed to bring young people closer to scientific spaces and strengthen early vocations.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Hernández highlighted that the program constitutes a direct link for the development of national scientific talent. “You, who are part of this program, are guarantors of the development of this country, because the country is built with its people, with each and every one of you,” he told the participants

The Deputy Minister also highlighted the training opportunities currently offered by the Venezuelan scientific system through the National University of Sciences, and emphasized that the objective of the program transcends academic competence and seeks to promote the comprehensive training of young people.

“The future is now and it's up to you, boys, that you don't faint, it's not just competition, it's continuing each and every day to delve into knowledge,” he said.

During his speech, Hernández reported that more than 9,000 young people participated in this edition of the Olympics, whose final phase was presented this Thursday at the facilities of the Dr. Salvador Allende Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) with a final participation of 316 students.

As part of the agenda, the finalists took a guided tour of the laboratories of the National University of Sciences Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán and the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC).

“It's no accident to come here to celebrate the closing of this 2026 season. It's not a coincidence, it's a method that we apply so that you can know and feel the spaces of science and technology,” he said.

The Olympics awarded the 60 participants who obtained the best scores in the competition, with students Sebastián Álvarez and Miguel Vergel, both 15 years of age and representing the state of Zulia, who were selected with the highest score of the match.
