Last Sunday, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro confirmed the initiation of legal action against his Ecuadorian counterpart, Daniel Noboa, after statements linking him to the leader of the criminal organization “Los Choneros”.
Through his social networks, the head of state described the statements as slanderous and recalled that, during his last official visit to Ecuador, Noboa himself coordinated a military deployment to ensure his personal safety.
The Colombian president attributed the deterioration of the diplomatic relationship to his formal request for the release of former Vice President Jorge Glas, whom he identified as a citizen and political prisoner. According to Petro's account, the change in treatment by the Ecuadorian Executive occurred as a result of this request, which has generated a cross of public accusations between the two governments in recent hours.
The controversy escalates due to the situation of Glas, who has been held in a maximum security prison since November 2025 under the administration of Noboa. Petro denounced that the transfer of the former official was carried out by exposing him publicly, thus ignoring the provisional measures granted by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Inter-American Court of Human Rights) to safeguard his physical and legal integrity during the process.
The Colombian president expressed concern about the alleged state of extreme malnutrition suffered by Glas in the prison and formally requested that it be handed over to the Colombian authorities. This demand adds a new dimension to the bilateral crisis, as the judicial system processes the criminal lawsuit for slander filed against the Ecuadorian president.
