The President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, publicly denounced an alleged kidnapping attempt against Senator Alexander López, a serious incident that has set off alarm bells in the national political scene. The complaint comes in a context of high tension, a few days before the next elections are held in the country, which for several analysts shows a worrying upsurge in political violence aimed at destabilizing the democratic process.

State security authorities have already deployed a priority investigation scheme to clarify the details of the attack and determine the whereabouts of the material and intellectual perpetrators.

Given the seriousness of the events, different leaders of the ruling party and of independent sectors have expressed their absolute rejection of this act of intimidation, which directly threatens the integrity of the congressman.

Senate candidate Iván Cepeda was one of the first to react, reiterating his previous warnings about the direct interference and coercion of various illegal armed groups that seek to alter the free development of election day in the most vulnerable regions.

Cepeda emphasized that these types of violent actions are intended to sow fear both in candidates for public office and in citizens who are preparing to exercise their right to vote.

The situation has led the Electoral Observation Mission and other human rights organizations in New Granada to urgently request the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police to immediately reinforce security schemes for all political leaders and candidates under threat.

The persistence of harassment and illegal retention plans in rural and urban areas highlights the structural challenges faced by the nation to ensure a peaceful and transparent environment during the elections. Political parties have closed ranks demanding real guarantees that prevent weapons from determining the course of the democratic debate.

For its part, the Attorney General's Office is compiling the testimonies of the parliamentary protection scheme and analyzing the technical evidence collected at the scene of the event to determine what criminal structure is behind this plan.

The central Government has ratified its commitment to maintaining public order and deploying all available force through the Democracy Plan to shield voting stations across the country. The evolution of this investigation and the contingency measures adopted in the next few hours will be decisive in mitigating the impact of violence on the outcome of the Colombian electoral contest.
