The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, confirmed the shipment of solar panels to Cuba as part of an energy cooperation strategy in the face of the restrictions faced by the island.
The head of state noted that the objective is to support the strengthening of electrical infrastructure in the Caribbean, in line with initiatives promoted by China, which recently delivered photovoltaic systems for Cuban health centers, according to a press release from Telesur.
A plane carrying medicines, medical supplies and food took off from the Military Transport Air Command (CATAM), in an operation coordinated by the Colombian Government and social organizations.
Senator Gloria Flórez, of the Historical Pact, said that this action responds to the solidarity of the Colombian people and the houses of friendship that are running campaigns to mitigate the effects of last year's hurricane and the tightening of the blockade. “This effort reflects the commitment of those working to alleviate the current situation,” he said.
The Cuban Solidarity Movement and various trade union unions continue to collect essential goods for new shipments.
For the political organizations involved, the provision of resources constitutes a response of the peoples of the region to the isolation policies that affect daily life in the Caribbean.
