Various political forces and social movements that support the Government of President Gustavo Petro in Colombia, called on the country's population to march in large numbers to defend the Presidency of the leader of the Historical Pact, in the face of the pretensions of the Colombian right that plans to carry out a “coup d'etat”.
“If the right wing in Colombia wants to carry out a coup d'etat against the Government of Change, then tomorrow, October 11, we will say 'March against the coup'. See you on the streets! They won't pass! Certain sectors are scared and desperate. Let's go Colombia! No to the coup d'etat,” said the senator of the Commons party, Sandra Ramírez, on her account on the social network X.
For her part, the Wayú indigenous leader Karmen Ramírez Boscán, a congressman from the House of Representatives, said that we must support President Petro's call to mobilize to defend democracy and the triumph of revolutionary forces.
“This victory has cost us a lot and we will not allow a few uncompeted bureaucrats to take away our right won democratically and cleanly at the polls, violating international law. No to the coup d'etat,” he said.
The senator of the Historical Pact, the party that supports the president, María José Pizarro, also said that “this Friday from the streets of Colombia we say 'No to the coup d'etat'”.
“We met in Plaza de Bolívar starting at 10:30 in the morning to demonstrate in unity for the defense of democracy and in support of President Gustavo Petro and the government of the people,” Pizarro added.
The call was made after earlier this week the National Electoral Council (CNE), composed mostly of opposition magistrates, opened an investigation and accused Petro, along with three members of his electoral campaign, for allegedly exceeding the limit of resources allowed for the 2022 presidential elections.
Despite this, according to the Colombian constitution, the CNE has no competence to open any investigation against the president of the republic. “To allow constitutional lawlessness is to initiate a coup d'etat,” Petro said.
