The president of the National Association of Supermarkets and Self-Services (ANSA), Ítalo Atencio, reported this Tuesday in Caracas a sustained increase in the consumption of food from the basic basket during the first half of the year, within the framework of a plenary meeting of the National Council for Productive Economy aimed at evaluating the country's supply and industrial apparatus.

“Growth was better than last semester and we are still working,” Atencio said, detailing that sectors such as corn, rice and flour registered an increase of more than 29% compared to the previous year.

The business spokesman specified that the protein sector, which includes chicken, eggs, sausages and meat, as well as powdered milk, showed an upward behavior of more than 20%, while the consumption of tuna experienced an increase of 60%.

During his speech to government authorities, including the Minister of National Trade, Luis Villegas, the union representative emphasized the macroeconomic impact of this commercial dynamism.

In this regard, he stressed that “the added value that the industry has been contributing to the national economy has already exceeded 32 billion dollars”, a figure that, when added together the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and manufacturing, represents a contribution of between 3.5% and 4% that directly benefits the final consumer's plate and mobilizes domestic logistics.

The technical boards of the Economic Council ratified their mutual commitment to maintain incentives for local production to consolidate the stability of the domestic market.

Atencio concluded by stating that these results show that “Venezuela has the potential and has the reality of its human resources to move forward”, projecting a favorable end to the year for the country's supply and commercial activity.
