The highest authority of the National Agricultural Confederation (CONFEAGRO), Pablo Alvarado, stressed that, so far, producers have more than 2,300 hectares of sorghum planted in the state of Guárico and plan to reach a total of 2,500 hectares between that entity, Portuguesa and Anzoátegui.
The spokesperson also stressed during an interview with Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) that the long-term goal of the sector contemplates the recovery of the 180,000 hectares that were cultivated in previous years in the national territory.
This production is under the impetus of the “Let's Go with Sorghum” Plan, an initiative promoted by the agricultural sector in partnership with the company Diproagro and in coordination with the Ministry of People's Power for Productive Agriculture and Lands. The strategy seeks to promote sorghum as a highly resistant and specialized alternative to face the severe droughts and high temperatures affecting the region.
The union leader explained that this measure responds to the ravages that the climate crisis causes on traditional crops such as corn. Faced with extreme heat and lack of water in agricultural areas, corn cultivation has affected the plant's carrying capacity, so sorghum is positioned as a sustainable solution to ensure agricultural continuity in the country.
