The Cuban Electric Union, an agency attached to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, announced the activation of contingency protocols due to the disconnection of the national electricity system due to strong winds caused by Hurricane Rafael, category 3.
In addition, the Civil Defense Service of the Antillean nation established the Cyclone Alarm phase for several provinces of the island, a few hours after the predicted impact of Rafael on the country's land surface.
The provinces affected by the meteorological phenomenon are Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana, Artemisa, Pinar del Rio and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
In this regard, through his account on the social network X, the president of the Municipal Defense Council of Isla de la Juventud, Osbel Lorenzo, pointed out that the effects of the hurricane are beginning to be felt in Cayo Largo del Sur, which in just a few hours will affect the entire territory.
As Rafael approaches the south of the island, the winds gain intensity and blow in an east-southeast direction, causing strong surges on the south-central and western coast.
