During her participation in the World Congress of Mother Earth, which is being held in Caracas, this Friday, the Executive Vice President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, dismantled what she described as the “environmental colonialism” practiced by the industrialized nations of the Global North.
Faced with the climate emergency, evidenced by 2024 as the hottest year in 175 years, Rodríguez pointed to the hypocrisy of high-income countries. “This green transition is a farce, because they do the green transition at the expense of the sacrifices of the people of the south, of the peoples of the south,” he criticized.
The Vice President stressed that the crisis is not the responsibility of all humanity equally. With accurate data, he argued: “The richest one percent of the world's richest needed only the first 10 days of 2025 to consume their share of CO2... It only took 10 days to consume what a person is entitled to in 1 year.” This logic, he said, is not that of the “anthroposene”, but that of “capitalosene”, a predatory and anti-life capitalist model.
In this regard, Rodríguez called for environmental justice, refusing to force the peoples of the South, who have the lowest carbon footprint, to bear the costs of a crisis they did not cause, in what he defined as a new and dangerous form of colonialism.
