The Presidential Commission for the Recovery of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) is moving forward with the demolition of the so-called Political Studies Warehouse, one of the three improvised structures located in front of the corridor of the Law School, which are not part of the original project of the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva.

According to a press release replicated by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), these buildings, built with poor materials and lightweight structures, were erected to protect construction materials, medium and small machinery and tools from the elements, but, after fulfilling their function, they were not disincorporated. In addition, these sheds are roofed with asbestos, a group of fibrous minerals that were used for their resistance to heat, but which are currently banned, since the inhalation of its fibers causes lung cancer.

“It is a substance incompatible with the general principles of architecture that are in force,” said the restorative architect, Lesmes Castañeda, who added that the demolition of warehouses is part of spatial prophylaxis. “We must also eliminate the occupation of corridors, of circulation, which are public, by offices or other dependencies. Remove overly placed panels or grilles. Our commitment to UNESCO is to gradually eliminate all of this,” he said.

To date, the Commission has refurbished 686 rooms, 234 laboratories, 615 offices, 495 bathrooms, 142 offices, 13 auditoriums and an equal number of amphitheaters, in addition to nine gymnasiums, 14 courts, six works of art and five operating rooms.
