An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale , “with its epicenter in the sea”, shook the city of Lima, capital of Peru, this Thursday afternoon, confirmed the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN).

According to data from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), the earthquake occurred at 15:53 local time with an epicenter 36 kilometers west of the province of Huaral, which is located 80 kilometers north of the city of Lima, and had a depth of 57 kilometers.

In this regard, the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy clarified, in its account of the social network X, that the characteristics of the seismic movement “do not generate tsunamis on the Peruvian coast”.

The National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) of the COEN stated that this “was strongly perceived by the population” in the provinces of Huaral, Huaura and Metropolitan Lima, so the authorities are carrying out monitoring in vulnerable areas to detect possible damage.
