This Saturday, a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 shook the coast of the province of Davao Occidental at night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The earthquake occurred exactly at 18:34 (local time), with its epicenter located about 59 kilometers southeast of the island of Sarangani. Due to its superficial nature, with a depth of just 10 kilometers, the tremor was clearly perceived in various locations in the southern region of the archipelago.

Despite the intensity of the movement and the fact that the tremors were felt throughout the island, the seismological authorities expressed a measure of peace of mind when they reported that no significant material damage or human casualties are expected.

However, the institute warned the population about the possibility of aftershocks in the next few hours, so they urged citizens to remain alert and follow the safety protocols established for these natural events.

The frequent seismic activity in the Philippines is not an isolated event, but a direct consequence of its strategic geographical location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. This region is known worldwide for concentrating some of the most active tectonic plate boundaries on the planet, making the country a critical point for recurring earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

This new event highlights the importance of early monitoring systems in the country, which allow for a rapid response to subsurface threats.

So far, civil protection agencies continue to evaluate rural areas near the epicenter in the municipality of Sarangani to rule out any minor incidents and ensure normal working hours.
