Ecuador imposes fourteen-hour power cuts for three consecutive days

Ecuador began three days of scheduled blackouts of up to fourteen hours a day, as a result of a worsening energy crisis as a result of drought in the areas of its main hydroelectric power plants and lack of government foresight to avoid an electricity supply crisis.

This was announced by the Minister of Energy, Inés Manzano, who said that the duration of the blackouts will be re-evaluated on Sunday.

Ecuador currently has a deficit of around 1,000 megawatts to meet its national demand, because the country's energy matrix depends on more than 70% of hydroelectric power plants, affected by the worst drought in the last 60 years, as described by the Ecuadorian Government.
