El Niño phenomenon is strengthening and Ecuador expects intense rains and high temperatures by the end of 2026

The National Committee for the Regional Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (CN-ERFEN) maintains an active state of warning in Ecuador in view of the progressive strengthening of the weather phenomenon, which could reach a very strong intensity in the last quarter of 2026 and the beginning of 2027. The technical body warned that the event will generate a significant increase in rainfall, river floods and increases in average temperatures in various parts of the country.

For its part, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calculated a probability greater than 90% that this meteorological phenomenon will reach a severe magnitude in the region. Technical reports project significant anomalies in sea temperatures, with increases of up to +2.7 °C in the Niño 3.4 zone and +4 °C in the Niño 1+2 region, factors that will directly affect atmospheric instability.

In the short term, official forecasts indicate that between August 20 and September 5 there will be rains of varying intensity, occasional increases in river flows and temperatures above normal parameters, mainly in the coastal and coastal regions. Meteorological authorities continue to evaluate the evolution of these patterns to anticipate possible impacts on waterways.
