The European Union (EU) announced on Monday the allocation of five million euros in humanitarian aid for Venezuela, together with the shipment of a plane loaded with 50 tons of assistance material. These extraordinary resources are intended to provide shelter and medical care to communities affected by the two earthquakes recorded on June 24, VTV said.

According to the agency's official statement, the humanitarian flight will take off in the next few days from Copenhagen carrying water sanitation equipment, educational and protective equipment. For its part, the financial fund of five million euros will be directly implemented in medical assistance services and the provision of temporary shelters for the victims.

The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, ratified the block's commitment to the Venezuelan people in the face of the contingency. The official stressed that this additional funding will provide timely assistance to families who lost their homes, to patients who require health care and to children whose schools suffered structural damage.

In addition, twelve member countries of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, including Spain, deployed rescue teams, medical personnel and technical support in telecommunications. Additionally, experts from Spain, Austria, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Estonia and the European community arrived in the country over the weekend to join operations in the field.

To optimize rescue maneuvers, the European Commission activated the Copernicus satellite system a few hours after the accidents. This technological tool has provided 25 maps and 13 high-resolution images, providing useful geospatial information for rescue committees, non-governmental organizations and civil protection authorities.

This emergency contribution is in addition to the 52 million euros that the European bloc had already disbursed during the year to respond to the national situation. The most recent official report on the contingency records a balance of 1,450 people killed, 3,150 injured and 12,721 families affected throughout the affected territory.
