The Venezuelan careta, captain of the Kansas City Royals, Salvador Pérez won the Roberto Clemente Award 2024, after demonstrating that he is a superstar on and off the big league field.
On the field during 2024, he averaged .271 with 27 home runs and 104 RBIs. While off the field, in Venezuela he organized several events with his family members to deliver food and kitchen items to some 2,000 homes in his hometown of Valencia.
In addition, he has paid for dozens of surgeries for children with cleft lips, donates more than a thousand toys annually to children's hospitals and supports police officers with car repairs, computers and office renovations, both in his home country and in the United States.
He and his family also founded a youth league that has grown to more than 200 players, providing well-maintained grounds, coaches, equipment and financial support.
According to the MLB.com report, the player has more than one million dollars in donations, mainly to help young people. For example, in Kansas City, it housed 100 homeless children and gave them items to play baseball.
Pérez became the first Kansas City player to be awarded such a distinction and the second among Venezuelans to achieve it, after Carlos Carrasco achieved it in the 2019 campaign.
At 34, he is a nine-time All-Star, a five-time Gold Glove winner and a four-time Silver Bat, and was the MVP of the World Series when the Royals won their second title in 2015.
The Venezuelan will be honored this Monday, in Game 3 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, at Yankee Stadium.
