Extreme weather in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais leaves nine dead

Brazilian authorities reported that the number of victims due to torrential rains in the municipality of Ipatinga, state of Minas Gerais, where it has risen to nine deaths, the Telesur website reported.
Due to the catastrophe, the City Council declared a state of public calamity for Ipatinga for 180 days and another 623 municipalities were put on alert for potential danger.
For its part, the National Meteorological Institute estimated that moderate to heavy rains could occur in this region until late Monday morning.
The event occurred during the early morning hours between Saturday and Sunday, when 80 mm of precipitation was recorded in just one hour, causing river overflows and landslides.
The victims, including a minor, mostly died as a result of house collapses, according to press reports.
Several people were buried underground and were taken out by members of the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department.
Most of the damage caused is due to landslides, in some cases of houses built on very steep slopes or unstable floors.
Between one and three people are reported missing. Firefighters and Civil Defense evacuated and relocated 150 people to safe places.
