Twelve people have died as a result of the heavy rains affecting Honduras, in addition to injuries, communities and large incommunicado areas, the Ministry of National Risk and Contingency Management of that country reported.

In its latest incident report, the Standing Committee on Contingencies of the above-mentioned portfolio specifies that there are 10,842 people affected, of whom 347 are evacuated, and 1,759 homes damaged.

In the capital, Tegucigalpa, the city's Fire Department confirms that the most critical situation occurred in the neighborhoods Abajo, La Concordia and the Betania neighborhood, where the Choluteca River began to overflow, putting riverine housing at direct risk.

The chain of incidents began at 10:08 at night in the Dulce Nombre de Jesús neighborhood, where three houses were flooded by a strong current that crossed the streets. Emergency units quickly intervened to divert flow. Minutes later, at 10:20 p.m., the Las Colinas neighborhood reported a collapse and, in that same sector, it is verified that the increase in the flow of the ravine damaged the perimeter wall of another house.

Emergency personnel remain active and recommend that citizens avoid driving or staying close to rivers, streams and slopes, given the persistence of the high risk of overflows and landslides in vulnerable areas of the capital.
