The former president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, was
accused by the Public Ministry for revealing service secrets and inducing
a subordinate to commit a punishable act, false reporting, simulation of a
punishable act, usurpation of public functions and criminal association, among other serious crimes, according to local media.
The former president was accused along with eight other authorities
of his government because “there are sufficient elements of conviction to
suspect the existence of punishable acts,” says the indictment of the Public Prosecutor's Office recorded by
the local press.
The list of defendants includes Abdo's private secretary,
Mauricio Espínola; his Minister for the Prevention of Money Laundering, Carlos
Arregui; the former Minister of the Interior, Arnaldo Giuzzio; and his intelligence advisor, Daniel Farías Kronawetter.
There are also other authorities from
the National Anti-Corruption Secretariat, Secretariat for the Prevention of
Money or Property Laundering (Seprelad) and Financial Analysis.
These actions follow the complaint filed by the
former president (2013-2018) and current president of the ruling Colorado Party,
Horacio Cartes, in July 2023 for alleged leaks of
intelligence reports from the Seprelad, among other punishable acts.
