The former Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) Ernesto Samper, after the diplomatic crisis between Colombia and the United States, assured that Latin American countries must form a common front to address issues such as migration, strengthen regional integration and approach economies in the global south such as those of the BRICS.

In an interview with the Sputnik portal, the former president of Colombia also indicated that Latin American countries could present at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), urgently convened for January 30 by Honduran President Xiomara Castro, a common position on issues such as migration, the fight against drugs, the defense of territorial sovereignty under threat, the case of the Panama Canal and the defense of China's collaboration in Latin America.

“All of these are issues that should form part of a kind of response from Latin America to the theses that today form part of the new Trump Doctrine,” said Samper.

He added that the policy of the new US Government returns to the region 50 years ago, at the time of Operation Condor, when the intention of US imperialism was to destabilize countries that were considered enemies.

“Integration has never been more important than it is now in Latin America and we have never been as disintegrated as we are at the moment,” lamented the coordinator of the Puebla Group, which brings together progressive leaders from Latin America.
