The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, reported that hundreds of families like Colombians are taking refuge in Venezuelan territory due to recent armed clashes in the neighboring country.

“What has been happening in recent days there (Colombia) has generated a wave of displaced people, we are talking about hundreds of families who have been forced to take refuge in Venezuelan territory, fleeing this violence in their region,” he said in a telephone contact broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).

He stressed that on instructions from President Nicolás Maduro, the National Government is caring for families who are victims of an armed conflict that has been going on for more than 70 years in Colombia.

“Venezuela is always ready to help on the border with Colombia. We are talking about the deployment of health, food to serve these families,” he said.

He noted that he has coordinated with the Colombian Government to support the civilian population of this sister nation.

It should be noted that last Thursday there were clashes between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), in the Catatumbo region, in the north of the country.

The action resulted in the announcement of the suspension of the Peace Dialogue by President Gustavo Petro with the ELN.
