The Government of Mérida ordered the preventive closure of Local Road 008 after a rocky landslide that affected the structure of the Caracol bridge, as a result of the rains recorded in the early morning of this Sunday.

According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Santa Teresa tunnel and triggered the immediate deployment of security and risk management agencies to assess the damage and ensure the protection of users of the road that connects Mérida to El Vigía.

The Secretary of Public Safety, Antonio Rodríguez, reported that the impact of the rocky material caused a hole in the bridge, forcing the start of high-priority technical work.

Under the supervision of Governor Arnaldo Sánchez, specialized crews and heavy machinery are working on the removal of sediments and on the structural analysis necessary to safely restore traffic.

The authorities urged the population to respect the restrictions and recommended that drivers check road conditions at the checkpoints of El Anís, Las González and the El Vigía toll booth
