The government of the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced increases of up to 150% in electricity rates for users in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), with monthly updates starting next April, the Telesur website reported.

The Milei administration revealed this Thursday, the 15th, the new tariff schedules for the AMBA, with the following details: starting this Friday, users of the Edenor and Edesur distributors with low incomes (categorized as N2) will experience an increase of close to 70%, while those with average incomes (known as N3) will see increases of approximately 65%.

However, for this last group of consumers, if their consumption exceeds 600 KW/H, the increase will be in the order of 130%, as detailed by the Ministry of Energy, headed by Eduardo Rodríguez Chirillo, in a press release.

According to official information, in the case of high-income consumers, considering an average consumption of 380 KW/H per month, those classified as N1 users will see an increase of 150%, going from a bill of 13,900 pesos (16.66 dollars) to 34,332 pesos (41.14 dollars).

These new values will be in effect until the comprehensive tariff review pending for the five-year period (2024-2028) is completed.

Starting in April, a monthly adjustment mechanism based on the inflation rate, which registered 20.6% in January, will be implemented, according to the report of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) released last Wednesday.

According to this INDEC report, the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the first month of the year was mainly driven by the increase in goods and services, with 44.4%.
