The Greek government established a historic precedent in regulating the European digital environment. The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced the formal ban on access to social networks for all children under 15, a measure that will take effect on January 1, 2027.

This decision is not only presented as a technical regulation, but as an urgent state intervention to safeguard the mental health of the new generations.

During the presentation of the initiative, the Greek president warned about the impact of the digital ecosystem on youth development, describing a cycle of hyperconnectivity that compromises emotional well-being.

“The continuous use of screens generates profound mental fatigue; constant exposure to the judgment of others is altering the perception that our young people have of reality and of themselves,” said Mitsotakis, who elevated the situation to the category of a public health problem.

The measure is based on recent scientific studies that link the intensive use of digital platforms with a critical increase in levels of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders in adolescents.

With this step, Greece aligns with the regulatory trend of countries such as Australia and France, but it positions itself at the forefront with one of the strictest legal frameworks in the world to curb the harmful effects of digital life on children and adolescents.
