The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) of Guatemala issued an official tsunami warning for its Pacific Ocean coasts this Friday, following the powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.2 recorded in Panama.
The emergency warning was declared at 12:28 p.m. local time, immediately activating the highest level of preventive surveillance along the entire Central American coast in the face of the risk of anomalous variations in sea level.
“We urge the population of coastal communities to get away from the beach strip preventively and strictly abide by the instructions of the relief corps,” details the publication of the official spokespersons of Guatemalan civil protection agencies calling for calm and prevention.
Risk management bodies maintain permanent supervision in beach areas and port infrastructure to evaluate the evolution of the waves and coordinate possible preventive evacuations.
