“I think the time has come to activate Binational Zone number 1 with everything that has to do with mobility, transport and commerce and on the Venezuelan side everything that has to do with the fight against criminal gangs, drug traffickers and paramilitaries and to continue to extend our hand to the People of Colombia.”

This was stated by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, who ordered the Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, to begin talks aimed at realizing this initiative, which was agreed with his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro.

The Head of State emphasized the importance of the deployment and coordination of the police and military forces of Venezuela and Colombia to guarantee the protection of these economic zones of shared development.

“We must reach out our hands to Colombia's police and military forces and together ensure that this entire area is a zone of peace and coexistence,” he urged while highlighting Venezuela's achievements in the fight against drug trafficking and other forms of crime.

Venezuela is drug-free territory, we are free, and we have the method, we can modestly share the method for defending South America as a crime-free zone,” he said.

After specifying that this first zone comprises the border area that Venezuela shares with Colombia through the states of Táchira and Zulia, he recalled that both leaders agreed to form three zones, the second consisting of the border zone in the state of Apure and the third by the state of Amazonas.
