Honduran authorities agreed with the Donald Trump Administration on the resumption of the extradition treaty, suspended after accusations of American interference in the country's internal affairs, as reported by the president, Xiomara Castro.
“I announce that I have reached an agreement with the new United States Administration so that the Extradition Treaty continues with the necessary safeguards for the State of Honduras, guaranteeing its objective application,” details a statement published by the president in X.
He also explained in the message that in the agreement with Washington he managed to guarantee “respect for the integrity of the Armed Forces, an institution responsible for defending sovereignty, maintaining peace, asserting the rule of the Constitution and guaranteeing security” of the democratic electoral process.
Honduras had suspended the extradition treaty with the United States in August 2024 after the US ambassador in Tegucigalpa, Laura Dogu, criticized a meeting held on August 20 by the Secretary of National Defense of Honduras, José Manuel Zelaya, and the Honduran Chief of Staff, Roosevelt Hernández, with the Venezuelan Defense Minister, Vladimir Padrino López.
