The Government of Hungary raised regional tension to the maximum this Sunday by denouncing an alleged sabotage plan against the BalkanStream gas pipeline, a critical infrastructure that transports Russian gas through Serbia. According to the official report, security authorities found powerful explosive devices in the north of Serbian territory, in the immediate vicinity of the common border, which triggered a national security alert.
Budapest described the incident as a direct attempt to destabilize its energy security and pointed to Ukrainian intelligence services that they were behind the operation.
The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, spoke about the finding, calling it an existential threat to the country. “We are facing an act of State terrorism that sought to leave millions of Hungarian families without supply in the process of returning from vacation,” said the president.
Orbán emphasized that the protection of energy infrastructure is now the absolute priority of its military and police forces, warning that “Hungary will not allow foreign conflicts to destroy the peace and well-being of its citizens through acts of criminal sabotage.”
For his part, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, confirmed the deployment of special units in the affected area and supported the seriousness of the complaint. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the objective was to cause irreversible damage to the flow of gas to Central Europe,” said Vučić, who also highlighted bilateral coordination to shield the area.
From Budapest, the Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, went further by denouncing “systematic hostility” from Kiev, assuring that this finding is not an isolated event, but part of a strategy to put political pressure on Hungary.
Faced with serious accusations, the Ukrainian government has categorically denied any involvement, suggesting that it could be a “false flag” operation aimed at fracturing European unity. However, Hungary has called for an urgent international investigation and has reinforced technological and military surveillance on all its energy frontiers.
This incident deepens the diplomatic divide in Eastern Europe, at a time when supply security has become the main chessboard of continental geopolitics.
