This Monday, the Guaraní-Kaiowá indigenous community in the Limão Verde village was the victim of a violent police raid this Monday, in a high-tension border area between Brazil and Paraguay, Telesur said.

According to reports from the site, members of the Military Police and the Department of Border Operations of Mato Grosso do Sul carried out a dispersion operation that included the use of shots and bombs against community members who were in the area.

The conflict originated after a land recovery action undertaken by indigenous people on a farm that overlaps with the Tapykora Kora ancestral territory. This territory has been undergoing a lengthy process of official demarcation since 2008, and the lack of a definitive resolution has intensified territorial disputes between the native communities and the owners of rural properties in the region.

Given the seriousness of the attack and the risk of new confrontations, Guaraní-Kaiowá leaders have issued an international and national call for help. The community requests the immediate and urgent intervention of the National Public Security Force, as well as several Brazilian federal authorities, to stop police violence and guarantee the physical integrity of the men, women and children who live in the village.

This new episode of repression highlights the critical situation faced by indigenous peoples in Mato Grosso do Sul, where the delay in the regularization of their ancestral lands continues to generate scenarios of confrontation. Human rights defenders demand that the Brazilian State comply with its constitutional obligations of indigenous protection to prevent these border disputes from turning into a major humanitarian tragedy.
