“Thanks to the policies of President Nicolás Maduro, we have the support to continue moving forward,” said Mirla Atencio, representative of the indigenous peoples who marched this Monday in Caracas to commemorate the day of Indigenous Resistance.
From Chacaíto, the area where this march began, which would culminate in the Monument to Indigenous Resistance located in Plaza Venezuela, this leader recalled that 532 years ago, the Spanish empire began a genocide that sought to remove its original inhabitants from these lands.
“They tried to disappear us by cutting our branches, but they couldn't and here we are defending our roots,” he said and highlighted the importance of transmitting ancient knowledge from generation to generation to guarantee the permanence of the rich history of indigenous peoples.
“For centuries we have been transmitting all our ancient knowledge to new generations and today, thanks to the Bolivarian Revolution, we are recognized and we have our own laws,” he said.
For his part, José Blanco, an indigenous member of the state of Amazonas, assured that the original peoples “feel happy and proud of our Bolivarian Revolution.”
“No imperialist will deceive us. We have a Constitution that recognizes us as original inhabitants with rights and we are well focused and that the imperialists listen to us; we are not going to fall into their deceptions and we are going to continue on the path of revolutionary struggle,” he said.
