The Dukono volcano, one of the most active colosses on the island of Halmahera, in northeastern Indonesia, has registered a new and intense eruptive phase. During the event, the crater ejected a dense column of greyish ash that rose 1,000 meters above its summit, reaching a total altitude of approximately 2,087 meters above sea level.
According to detailed information from Telesur, the magnitude of the column has been visible from several points in the province of North Moluccas, raising concern among local communities.
Faced with this increase in geological activity, the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation issued an immediate alert. Authorities have established a 4-kilometer exclusion perimeter around the Malupang Warirang crater, strictly prohibiting any human activity, including tourism and resource gathering, due to the risk of falling incandescent material and pyroclastic flows.
In addition, the population and visitors have been urged to wear masks and protective goggles on a mandatory basis to mitigate the effects of ash rain. The inhalation of these fine particles represents a significant risk to the respiratory system, so local health agencies are already distributing protection kits and monitoring air quality in settlements near the volcano's foothills.
Finally, the regional government has activated its emergency protocols and is constantly monitoring the evolution of the Dukono. Citizens are advised to remain attentive to official statements and avoid the spread of rumors, while rapid response teams evaluate possible evacuations should the intensity of the eruption increase in the coming hours.
