The Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity, this Saturday, December 27, issued a statement denouncing the arbitrary and completely unjustified detention of journalist Mohammad Faraj, a member of the pan-Arab media outlet Al Mayadeen.

The letter states that “he is currently missing after police officers separated him from his family at Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport.”

Below is the full text of the statement:

The Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity denounces the arbitrary and completely unjustified detention of journalist Mohammad Faraj, a member of the pan-Arab media outlet Al Mayadeen, who is currently missing after police officers separated him from his family at Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport.

This fact constitutes a serious violation of human rights and a direct attack on press freedom, which seeks to silence voices committed to the truth and to the struggles of peoples. The lack of official information about their whereabouts and state of health increases concern and forces them to demand immediate answers and their unconditional release.

This action cannot be read as an isolated event: it is part of a machinery that operates in the shadows to impose silence and disinformation. Those who hold imperial power want the world to remain blind to their crimes, trying to hide the wars, occupations and injustices that are multiplying in different corners of the planet. The repression against journalists contrary to the hegemonic agenda is, in reality, an attempt to erase collective memory and to break the possibility of peoples knowing the truth.

The lack of official information about the reasons for his arrest, his whereabouts and state of health increases concern and forces him to demand immediate answers and his unconditional release. That is why we join the voices that around the world are in solidarity with Mohammad Faraj's family, with his colleagues and with the entire journalistic community that faces the uncertainty of not knowing where he is. We call on the competent authorities to urgently respond and release this man whose “crime” is to focus on the crimes of imperialism, and we call on the international community to remain vigilant. Mohammad Faraj's freedom is an imperative that cannot wait.
