The governor of the state of Táchira, Freddy Bernal reported this Thursday, February 27, that the 56th edition of the International Border Carnival was suspended.

He explained that due to the regrettable acts of violence last week and that it has continued in the North of Santander, where detonations have been recorded and explosive devices placed in various areas, it has disturbed the tranquility of the inhabitants of San Antonio and Ureña, the decision was made.

He commented that the situation presented in Colombia affects the border area. On the Venezuelan side, the border is in peace and quiet. The proximity of border towns has generated anxiety among the inhabitants because the detonations have been heard on the Venezuelan side.

Bernal stated that “there are no Carnivals in San Antonio del Táchira, because first the artists who had previously hired the mayor's office did not want to come, for obvious reasons.”

“The company in charge of the artistic montage was not willing to come and in the ordinary town there was nervousness. For these reasons, we didn't want to create a climate that would allow something crazy, I'm sure nothing would happen, but it's better not to risk it,” said Bernal.

He also reported that he has held telephone conversations with Ambassador Milton Rengifo, the governor of Norte de Santander and the mayor of Cúcuta where he reaffirmed the solidarity of the People of Venezuela with the People of Colombia.
