The Islamic Republic of Iran conditioned the progress of negotiations on its nuclear program on the complete and definitive lifting of all economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies. The announcement, made in Geneva by the ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Ali Bahrainí, sets out Tehran's official position for the next phase of international consultation.
“Tehran prefers the total lifting of restrictions,” Bahraini said, categorically rejecting any proposal for gradual or progressive relief of financial penalties. The diplomat argued that the phased scheme “is not an adequate format to guarantee economic predictability” of the Persian nation, so he confirmed that his delegation “will undoubtedly defend the idea of the total lifting of sanctions” within the framework of a final agreement.
This statement comes just days after the presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States signed a historic memorandum of understanding on June 17. This bilateral mechanism opened a formal way to negotiate a definitive treaty and thus to stabilize diplomatic ties, after several months of intense hostilities and geopolitical friction in the region.
The demand of the Islamic Republic of Iran introduced a new technical challenge for international delegations, which were evaluating a reciprocal and phased dismantling of both trade restrictions and uranium enrichment.
From now on, the mediating teams must analyze the viability of a unified schedule to reactivate the atomic pact under the strict financial guarantees required by the authorities.
