In what represents one of the most extreme measures in decades of occupation, the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) approved on Monday, a bill that imposes the death penalty exclusively for Palestinians convicted for political or nationalist reasons.
This decision, taken in the context of a humanitarian and territorial crisis that is more than 70 years old, has been denounced by global organizations as a mechanism of judicial persecution designed to silence resistance to illegal occupation.
The law is promoted by the most radical wing of the Zionist government of Benjamin Netanyahu, headed by Itamar Ben-Gvir, minister of National Security and leader of the ultra-nationalist Jewish Power party. The legal text contemplates hanging as a method of execution and would take effect in 30 days.
With a speech of open hostility, Ben-Gvir welcomed the approval, stating that the measure will serve to “eliminate our enemies”, confirming the punitive and non-judicial nature of this draconian sanction.
The international community, led by the UN and various human rights organizations, has condemned the law as racist and discriminatory, since it establishes a dual justice system that dehumanizes the Palestinian population.
It is expected that in the coming days, appeals will be filed with the Israeli Supreme Court to curb this regulation, which flagrantly violates international law and conventions on the treatment of populations under military occupation.
Opponents and analysts agree that this legislation ends up burying historic UN resolutions such as the 1967 one on the existence of two States with delimited borders.
By legalizing the death of those who oppose Israel's territorial control, the Jewish State deepens its apartheid policy and removes any possibility of a peaceful resolution that recognizes the sovereignty and dignity of the Palestinian people over their ancestral territory.
