A team of scientists from the Cell Therapy Unit of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) is carrying out research to generate a mini-organ similar to bone marrow for the formation and production of blood cells.
The head of the IVIC Cell Therapy Unit, José Cardier, explained that blood cells carry oxygen and other elements in the body, in addition to defending the body against viruses and bacteria .
Cardier specified that these cells are generated from a cell called hematopoietic, which is capable of “generating the formation of all types of cells found in the body, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, among others,” according to a press release from the Ministry for Science and Technology.
The research aims to demonstrate that, scientifically, it is possible to “take stem cells from a human being, place them in mini-organs -similar to bone marrow- and thus generate blood cells”.
