This Thursday, March 26, during Opening Day, Jedixson Páez made his debut with the Chicago White Sox in the match against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field, an appearance with which the pitcher is the 507th Venezuelan to reach the majors.
Páez, 22, joined Chicago as the team's first pick — second overall — in the Rule 5 Draft last December, after his stint with the Boston Red Sox organization. It should be noted that the young man from Tinaquillo is the third native of the state of Cojedes to join the MLB, following in the footsteps of receiver José Herrera and closer Daniel Palencia, both from San Carlos.
Although his debut was far from ideal after allowing three runs in one inning and a third —including a home run by Jake Bauers —, the goal now is for the young man to gradually lose pressure. As his manager pointed out, the challenge is that he doesn't give up on stage and work hard to stay in the big team. With his debut, Páez is the 30th Venezuelan to debut on an Opening Day, extending to 39 consecutive years with at least one tricolor premiere in the majors.
