“Day of the Declaration of Independence of Venezuela against the crown of Spain, it was like “the great Lazarus, a collective one, who was not dead but was awakening from a long dream (...)”. The Supreme Commander, Hugo Chávez, Caracas, July 5, 2004.
A day before that memorable event, Father Bolivar stated the following: “let us fearlessly lay the foundation stone of South American freedom. To hesitate is to lose ourselves.”
On July 5, 1811, the Congress of Venezuela solemnly declared its autonomy before Spain, through the document known as the Act of the Declaration of Independence, a palpable symbol of the battles and struggles of the people who gave their lives for freedom.
This historic event established in Venezuela, together with Father Simon Bolivar, the principles of equality among patriots, the abolition of censorship and freedom of expression.
At that time, representatives of the seven provinces belonging to the former Captaincy General of Venezuela (Caracas, Barquisimeto, Cumaná, Barcelona, Mérida, Margarita and Trujillo) gathered in the Chapel of Santa Rosa de Lima, in Caracas, made effective the separation of the Spanish crown and established a new sovereign nation.
The Act enshrined the constitutional principle and radically opposed the political, cultural and social practices that had been imposed during the three hundred years that the colonial regime had lasted in America.
The Patriotic Society composed mainly of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Miranda sealed with its heroic spirit the Act of Independence, which is a living letter and which continues to be in force among the revolutionaries and revolutionaries of our country.
