This Tuesday, December 9th, the
vice-president of the American Association of Jurists, Andrea Vlahusic,
reaffirmed her solidarity with Venezuela, stressing that the defense of the right to peace of
the Venezuelan people is also the defense of the peace of all the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
During his speech at the Assembly of
the Peoples for the Sovereignty and Peace of Our America, he argued that peace
must be comprehensively understood as a human right and a right of
peoples, and warned that it is currently threatened by actions that
violate the territorial integrity and political independence of Venezuela and
other Caribbean countries, in open violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the law
contemporary international.
He also denounced that these aggressions by the United States (USA) are
part of a strategy of “
hybrid war” that includes military deployment, unilateral coercive measures, economic
blockades, political and judicial manipulation, as well as
destabilization campaigns against governments and popular leaders in the region, with special emphasis on Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.
For this reason, he emphasized the need for
an anti-colonialist, anti-imperialist and anti-fascist approach to the defense
of peace, warning about the presence of U.S. military bases in the Caribbean
and the region, as well as about the role of these structures in the escalation of tensions.
He also raised the urgency of refounding international law and, in parallel, moving forward in the construction of a new international legality from the Global South. At the same time, he reiterated the support of the American Association of Jurists for the Venezuelan people and affirmed that their resistance “is a heroic struggle that protects the peace of the entire continent.”
